Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers may look nearly the same but there are some differences between the two species. The Hairy Woodpecker (Below Left) is much larger than the Downy Woodpecker (Below Right) with a bigger head compared to its body size and a longer beak. The Hairy Woodpecker has two red spots on the back of its head, clearly separated by a line of black feathers, while the Downy Woodpecker only has one large red spot centered on the back of its head.
